This Basic Bowl Turning class is designed for a wide range of experience levels—from those new to the lathe to intermediate turners looking to refine their skills. Beginners will focus on the essential “blocking and tackling” of bowl turning, while more experienced participants will explore alternative approaches, improved technique, and ways to work more confidently and efficiently. Topics include wood selection and grain orientation, mounting a blank, tool selection and use, shaping, sanding, and basic finishing.

The class runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and follows a demonstrate-then-hands-on format, ensuring plenty of time at the lathe. All materials are provided, including wood, tools, and safety equipment, and a boxed lunch is included. With 14 years of turning experience and training influenced by several master turners, the instructor brings a practical, fundamentals-first approach that helps students build confidence, improve control, and leave with techniques they can immediately apply in their own shops.

David Wyke will demonstrate the process of turning an 8” heart-shaped bowl, beginning with the heart profile cut out before mounting the blank on the lathe. This approach simplifies the process compared to shaping the bowl after turning and allows for greater control during the turning itself. David will walk through the key steps involved and highlight two critical techniques that make this an approachable and repeatable project. The demonstration is suitable for turners interested in learning an efficient method for creating heart-shaped bowls with clean, consistent results.

During Open Turning, participants will have a lathe, tools and materials available to them to work on various projects. Mentors will be available to assist.

The design of the half-moon bowl was inspired by the works of Alan Carter. A split bowl is a unique turning that can be made from a single board, which after turning is cut in half and then glued back together at the rim. The demonstration itself will focus on the actual construction of the split bowl from start to finish as the design and display possibilities of these bowls are endless. John will be discussing various methods on embellishing and display options and will be bringing some examples.
